ACWR: what the acute-to-chronic workload ratio is and why it decides injuries

When athletes write that they got injured “out of nowhere”, it usually wasn’t out of nowhere. Almost always a sharp rise in load came first — and that’s exactly what ACWR measures. It’s one of the best available indicators of when you’re asking for trouble.

What ACWR is

ACWR (acute:chronic workload ratio) is the ratio of acute to chronic training load. Put simply, it compares how much you’ve put in now (the last week) with what your body is used to long-term (typically the average of the last four weeks).

The idea is simple: the body can handle surprisingly large loads — if it’s prepared for them. The problem isn’t volume itself, but the speed at which it changes. When you pile on much more than you’re used to, the tissues can’t keep up with adaptation and injury risk rises.

How ACWR is calculated

You need two numbers — acute and chronic load — and one divided by the other:

Acute load = sum of load over the last 1 week
Chronic load = average weekly load over the last 4 weeks
ACWR = acute ÷ chronic

“Load” isn’t just a number of minutes. The most widespread way to quantify it is sRPE: multiply the session length in minutes by your sense of difficulty (RPE on a 1–10 scale). A one-hour session at difficulty 7 = 60 × 7 = 420 units (AU). Add them up over a week and you have acute load. Alternatively, load can be computed from heart rate (TRIMP, HR-weighted load) — NEXT8 does both.

Example: Over the last four weeks you averaged 1500 AU a week (chronic). This week, because of a tournament, your load jumped to 2400 AU (acute).

The sweet spot vs. the danger zone

Studies across sports agree fairly well on these bands:

  • ACWR below 0.8 — you’re training less than you’re used to. Fine short-term (recovery), but long-term you lose adaptation and readiness — and paradoxically raise your risk on return.
  • ACWR 0.8–1.3 — the sweet spot. Load rises at a sensible pace, the body keeps up with adaptation. This is where you want to spend most of your time.
  • ACWR 1.3–1.5 — yellow. It may not be a problem yet, but keep an eye on it.
  • ACWR above 1.5 — the danger zone. A sharp jump in load, a markedly higher chance of injury over the following days to two weeks.

Why it works — a bit of physiology

Muscles, tendons and bones strengthen in response to load — but with a delay. When load rises gradually, the tissues have time to remodel and are stronger. When you suddenly double it, adaptation lags behind the demands and an overload injury arises in that gap. Chronic load is effectively a proxy for “how trained the body currently is” — and ACWR measures whether current demands aren’t far beyond it.

The most common mistakes that drive ACWR up

  • An extra weekend tournament on top of a normal week — three matches in two days can send acute load soaring.
  • A return after a break (illness, injury, holidays) and trying to “catch up”. Chronic load has dropped, so even normal training is now a relatively big jump.
  • Little, then a lot — inconsistent weeks (one light, the next extreme) keep ACWR on a seesaw.
  • A sharp season start after a more relaxed summer.

The limits of ACWR (so you don’t treat it as a prophecy)

ACWR is a useful signal, not a magic formula. It doesn’t account for sleep, stress, nutrition or individual injury history — and the expert debate about its exact form is still ongoing. So treat it as one of the layers: it works great in combination with subjective data (fatigue, pain, sleep) and a coach’s common sense. On its own it won’t tell you everything, but it flags the days worth paying attention to.
