The Florbal Chodov juniors log at 70 %

The junior players of Florbal Chodov use NEXT8 every day, players and staff alike. We asked head coach Martin Kadlec, assistant coach Matěj Pěnička and two players what actually changed.

At a glance

Club: Florbal Chodov, juniors
Logging rate: Around 70 percent, even after the coaches stopped reminding
Player's time: Half a minute in the morning, half a minute in the evening
Documented intervention: Coaches had a player ease off due to high risk and overtraining

What changed

Oversight instead of instinct

The coach sees in the morning who is at risk, instead of waiting for a player to speak up.

Players log on their own

Around 70 percent, even after the coaches stopped reminding.

Pain surfaces sooner

A player who does not want to say it out loud enters it in the morning log.

Players change habits

They started watching sleep and hydration themselves.

Before, decisions ran on instinct

“It was fairly random. We had no systematic overview of how the lads actually felt, so we largely went by what they told us, or by our own impression and observation.”Martin Kadlec, head coach

That is the situation most youth teams are in. Information arrived only when a player came forward, or when a coach noticed he was struggling.

Players tell the app more than they tell the coach

The most interesting finding is not about numbers, it is about communication. A teenager often does not want to admit in front of the whole team that he does not feel well.

“Not every player wants to say that something is wrong or that he does not feel good. But by entering it in the app, we know about it and we can work with it.”Martin Kadlec, head coach

What the players say

“I get up, have breakfast and usually fill in the app on the way to school. It takes me about half a minute. Then I look at how ready I am, my injury risk and how I slept.”Rezek, junior player
“I mostly look at readiness and the NEXT8 Index. I changed my hydration a lot and I try to keep a regular sleep schedule.”Rezek, junior player

The second player came to the app with his own experience of overtraining from summer pre-season. And it was with him that the value of the coach seeing the same data showed up.

“The coaches saw I had a high injury risk because of fatigue and overtraining. So they told me to ease off so I would not get hurt.”Rauš, junior player
“I do not mind the coaches seeing it. These are things a coach should know about me so he can make training easier or harder for me.”Rauš, junior player

Why they log even without reminders

The most common worry coaches have is that the lads will drop it after a month. Chodov tested it deliberately and stopped reminding them.

70 %
of logs, during a period when the coaches deliberately did not remind anyone
“From the beginning we mainly explained why. I think a lot of the lads would fill it in even without us watching it so closely.”Martin Kadlec, head coach

A coach's morning

1

Team overview

The coach opens the overview and sees how the players are. Most are fine.

2

Who is at risk

When someone comes up, the coach opens their card.

3

What happened

He sees whether they are ill, slept badly or recorded pain.

4

He asks

If it goes on for several days, he takes it up with the player directly.

What they actually use

Daily player logs

Recovery, load, sleep, illness and pain.

Readiness before load

Mainly before training and matches.

Post-match questionnaires

Feedback straight from the players.

Live tactics board

Showing a situation to players right there in the hall.

Video analysis

Breaking down technique from matches and training.

Nutrition, on the players' side

Food and recipes are used mostly by the lads themselves.

What to take from this

  • Explain the why to players, not just the what. According to the coaches this is what kept them logging.
  • Expect some information to arrive through the app before it is said out loud.
  • The strongest effect is with players who already know overtraining first hand.
  • Daily logs and readiness are plenty to start with. The team picks up the rest gradually.

In short

  • Around 70 percent of players log regularly, even after the coaches stopped reminding them.
  • The log takes half a minute in the morning and half a minute in the evening.
  • A player who does not want to say something hurts enters it in the log, and the coach knows.
  • Coaches had a player ease off based on high risk and fatigue.

Common questions

Around 70 percent of players log regularly, even during a period when the coaches deliberately stopped reminding them.

According to the players, about half a minute in the morning and half a minute in the evening. One of them fills it in on the way to school.

Yes. Because of the data, one player changed his hydration to 2 to 2.5 litres a day and started keeping a regular sleep schedule. The other watches his load so he does not slip into overtraining.

Yes. They told one player to ease off because they saw a high injury risk from fatigue and overtraining.

No. Everything can be entered by hand and the app works the same.
