There’s a lot of noise around sports nutrition. Yet for 95% of players a few simple rules are enough — fuel before performance and building material after it.
Before training: fuel and nothing extra
The goal is to have energy and not a full stomach. The safe bet is carbs with a little protein, low in fat and fibre (those digest slowly and weigh you down).
- 2–3 hours before: a normal meal — rice/pasta/potatoes + chicken/fish, some vegetables.
- 30–60 minutes before: just a light snack — a banana, toast with honey, a bar.
- Don’t try anything new on match day. The stomach doesn’t like surprises.
After training: replenish and repair
After a load the body replenishes energy and repairs muscle. You help it with a combination of carbs (to restore glycogen) and protein (building material). You don’t have to catch the mythical “anabolic window” to the minute — what matters more is that you eat properly within a reasonable time (an hour or two is fine).
- Practical “after”: yogurt with fruit and muesli, quark with fruit, chicken with rice, or simply a normal lunch/dinner if you train near a meal.
- A rough protein target: about 20–40 g in the post-load meal.
Hydration — don’t underrate it
Even mild dehydration worsens performance and concentration. Drink throughout the day, not only in the locker room. For longer or hot efforts also replenish salt (mineral water, an electrolyte drink). A simple test: urine colour — pale is good.
What not to worry about
Most players don’t need a pile of pills or extreme diets. The basis is eating quality food regularly and in enough quantity; supplements make sense only when targeted (and NEXT8 recommends only proven, sensible ones, not miracles). The meal plan in the app also breaks calories and macros down to your goal, so you don’t have to count.
In short
- Before: carbs + a little protein, low fat/fibre; nothing new.
- After: carbs + protein within a reasonable time; the window isn’t down to minutes.
- Hydrate all day, add salt when it’s hot.
- The basis is normal, quality food, not pills.
